Looking in, looking out

The year 2015...my 43rd year of life.

Honestly, if I were to put this year down in the books, it would be by far, my most introspective yet my most outwardly set of days...if that makes sense.

I have learned more this year about myself, those around me and what matters most.

And so...here's what the year brought and taught me...

...that there is no need to spend time defining needs and wants, sometimes they are the same thing and sometimes, you just need to go for both
...that only you can find beauty in what you see and it can be as simple as a photograph like my favorite one above or a roadside tire
...that goals can change pretty frequently and so can their deadlines...go with the flow
...that not everyone will understand what we're setting out to do, no need to explain, keep them wondering
...that having a plan B will be your best friend, no really
...that on a cold day, the windows rolled down and the heater on does in fact feel great and if you meet someone who agrees, stay with them
...that if someone tells you to lower your expectations, ask if they'll lower their standards
...that social media is just that - social - it celebrates togetherness and reconnecting and I am ever so thankful for everyone I've reconnected with
...that I love my past as much as my present because it made me, me, and I rather like me
...that I may never arrange the dishwasher to the liking of a select few, but it does attract laughter and that's even better
...that God sees all, and that's what really matters to me
...that the sounds of crickets chirping and rustling leaves at night are infinitely better than the television on
...that a well made cocktail can make the world a better place and my cheeks nice and rosy
...that being an open book is the best thing in the world, just don't share every chapter with every person
...that sometimes, you just need to show up, no excuses, just be there
...that quite often, the person you least expected can offer that perfect chip of advice and you'll be blown away when you most need it
...that maybe my not watching the news doesn't make me very knowledgeable but I sure have more room for fun
...that football and Christmas music were not my go-to's this year but writing and blogging were, change is good
...that falling in love with life can happen anytime, stay open
...that making eye contact with strangers makes me plain happy, who among us doesn't deserve a random smile?
...that I will always have the utmost respect for the building, engineering and construction industry and all those hard hats
...that I do love divulging into my darker emotional side with music and lyrics and movies
...that I am thankful for those that tell me the truth no matter how tough it is
...that life can come with many surprises, stay alert
...that if it's in front of you, right in front of you, grab it
...that travel, true friends, a martini and really good chocolate cake are my favorite pleasures
...that one perfect kiss can make all your blues go away, be it from the one you are crazy about or your child
...that sometimes just getting out of the house or office is all you need to feel alive again
...that a long drive to anywhere is better than advil
...that family rocks and is not always related by blood
...that listening to others discuss politics, sports and fox news is better than participating, for me at least
...that I didn't focus on my faults this year, I fell in love with them
...that our shortcomings can sometimes be the perfect setting for what's upcoming
...that I can make a kid laugh, be there for a friend and make a man's heart beat
...that those that have been there for me get my blessings for life and major hugs too
...that being passionate, goofy and wanting things to be beautiful are my trademarks, well those and singing/dancing out loud
...that no one, absolutely no one, can ever take who you are away
...that those we lose in life, by death or heartache, were with us for the time meant
...that as a parent, we love our parents even more, because now we get it
...that right now, I wish nothing more than a view a top a mountain in Southern California, being thankful for my life and everything in it

...thank you 2015, being 43 was amazing...here's to 2016 and being 44

The Bench

The autumn air kissed my cheeks
far from the sounds of the city
The bench was waiting for us
and the scene, it was oh so pretty,

The muted sound of the mountains
so still yet strong in the distance
Created a atmosphere of beauty
and forgotten was any circumstance,

For in this very moment
I just wanted to be
Letting go of everything that ties
feeling nature set me free,

You walked along the sidewalk
and were mesmerized by the view
We didn't say a word to each other
until I turned to look at you,

Life, it's here to fall in love with
to consume us with all its offerings
Your eyes were saying a thousand words
and not one needed deciphering,

The bench was at once tepid
warmed by the sun but cold from the air
You took my hand and we sat for a while
not a whim or a worry did we care,

The autumn air wrapped us
with its beautiful outstretched arms
Unforgettable will this day always be
for nothing's better than me in your arms...

To Give...

Have you ever gifted someone something special? Be it something you made, something you bought or something of yourself? We all have right? It's a wonderful feeling isn't it? It makes you feel giddy knowing you put thought into. Knowing that when you gift it, that person is going to love it or you to the moon and back. Sadly, not always so...

There have been countless times when I have put so much thought into the occasion, the gift, the birthday or simply made the moment the best I could only to be crushed. It still hasn't deterred me though...I'm not me if I don't give 200% of myself. And at this moment, I say boo to those who don't rejoice in the spirit of being a recipient to us givers. Those that can't appreciate nor give such love and preciousness in return have no idea what they are missing sadly...

Adding salt to that wound is the poor effort made in the attempt to return such generosity. The countless thoughtless excuses that mount on their part. "Not enough time, just couldn't think of the right gift, didn't know what to get, didn't get to do what I really wanted to do, wasn't sure if you'd like it...yada yada yada..." Feelings subsequently get hurt and to this I simply ask, why? Is it so hard in this vastly available world to gift? To give outside of yourself what could become the single most beautiful memory in time? Be it the gift of an effort, a smile, a treasured item, time together, a memory to make...something to which we can all feel we're in a special place with one another.

I salute to those who do make that effort. To those who burn the midnight oil, brace rush hour traffic, save up cash to make it special, put in hours to make a music list, churn their stomachs to risk making a very perfect moment happen...here's to you. Because I've been there, will continue to be there and man oh man, it's just awesome to give your all.

May you ride the skateboard of life throwing caution to the wind and giving chance your absolute best. And if someone gives you that skateboard, be thankful, for it may never be gifted again.

So here I am...

So here I am
a steering wheel and my car in my hands,
If it's a dream
then wake me up and take away the fog and the steam,
Zero to sixty
the windows are rolled down and the radio's turned up to volume fifty,
My soul's on fire
and the passion within my soul fills me with desire,

So here I am
California blue skies and mountains surround the land,
Yeah I'm the one
driving the streets and finding my way to the setting sun,
Inspiration is it
or am I following your voice until I visit,
Places over here
that draw me closer to the emotions I hold dear,

So here I am
so happy to be around the ones that I love and understand,
Fill up my cup
with moments that I can't wait to taste and drink up,
Let's remember
what was yesterday and what might last forever,
Life is the unknown
but we're all here to live and laugh and love and show that we've grown,

So here I am
I'm letting the wind push me till I let go,
If you find me
then chase you will a spirit that's designed to be free,
I can't sit still
the ocean, the hills, the air gives me that perfect chill,
But when the night arrives
I'll steer you right to me and let the moonlight make us alive...
